One of the learnings and skills you should acquire as a medical student is learning the art of extracting clinical history and performing physical examination (PE).
It has been emphasized in previous and current medical literatures that the clinical history and PE alone can give you 80% of your diagnosis, and the remaining is from the laboratory diagnostics you will order to further support your diagnosis. The clinician (or the medical student) generates a set of testable pathophysiologic and diagnostic hypotheses from the history and PE, which are the differential diagnoses. It is this differential diagnosis which is subjected to laboratory testing.
